Experimenting with Tunisian Crochet
Tunisian Crochet is my latest addiction! Basically it's a mixture of crochet and knitting and really really fun! Tunisian Crochet hooks are quite longer than the standard hooks, as they have to hold a large number of stitches. Like standard crochet hooks, Tunisian hooks come in a number of sizes and can be adjusted to the pattern you work on.
Learning how to crochet with Tunisian hooks for a crocheter, is not difficult! I managed to grasp the whole idea in about 10 min, i.e. how to hold the hook and how to start off. I found this tutorial on Purl Bee quite helpful. If you follow this you will practise the basic Tunisian Crochet stitch.
I started crocheting away in rows back and forth and decided to change color as well. Changing the yarn color follows exactly the same principle as in standard crochet terms, i.e.when two stitches remain at the end of the Return Row, use the new color to draw through both loops. Quite easy!
This is practically the basic Tunisian Crochet stitch. But of course, I had to explore additional stitches in this new technique. While browsing through Pinterest I found that Tunisian Crochet has a stitch that looks like a knitted one! Quite my thing as I cannot knit at all, and all my efforts to learn haven't worked out. It's the Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch and it is now my nw favorite!
I immediately fell in love with this stitch and have already started dreaming about projects that could be worked with it! I was thinking of making a tank top! I also like the color combination I used for my swatch! Pink and yellow are my favorites lately! Basically, it's really really fun and of course a lot of practice is needed so as the stitches work up quickly. One other thing I discovered is that the yarn tends to curl up, in both stitches I tried out, but some blocking would fix that!
I really love discovering new techniques and stitches and I recommend you try Tunisian Crochet if you already haven't! The possibilities are endless and as always a bit of imagination during the process is necessary!:)
