Untangling Yarn with Jenn Poort from Color 'n Cream

I am so excited to share this colorful yarn addict with you today. I discovered her blog several months ago when I stumbled upon her amazing Flower Square tutorial! The lovely Jenn Poort from Color 'n Cream is here to share her experiences in crochet and some peeks at some of her current projects! Take it away Jenn!

When did you first learn to crochet?
It’s funny, I actually started twice when I was younger, but I didn’t see it through, ‘cause it took me too much time to my taste. But when I saw an article in Flow Magazine about 4,5 years ago (with crochet from Sarah London) I couldn’t resist any longer and got started. Been hookin’ ever since. Can’t stop! And I learned most from my mistakes… I’ m a real perfectionist and if I found a mistake, I would pull it aaaaalll out and do it again.
What is it that you love most about crochet?
The balls off yarn transforming into anything else. I love the repetition, the colors, the feel of yarn. The feeling when a project’s finished... It’s so soothing in a way and helps me think. Although I must admit, I watch a lot of movies during crochet… I must add that I really dislike that it takes so much time. My hands can never keep up with the ideas in my head. A lot gets lost that way.

What's your favourite thing to crochet?
Last week I started to crochet these little crochet flowers. It’s the most fun ever!! Al the colors, all these little Color Bombs brightening up anything! But I also love to do granny squares, little projects, like cushions or baby blankets. Never big projects, that bores me, just like amigurumi. Whatever I make, it’s needs to be very colorful!
What's been your best crochet achievement?
That’s a difficult one. Maybe finishing some doilies… Or the one big blanket I made? No I know, it’s all I learned about color and combining colors through crochet. I sucked at this at first, but after endlessly trying (over and over), I started to develop an eye for it. That’s what I’m most proud of. Oh, and I’m asked for a Craftmarket in Sweden this summer. Also something I’m really proud of and looking forward to!
Where do you find inspiration?
At first I found inspiration in Flow Magazine as I mentioned, but then from everywhere. Lucy from Attic 24 was a huge inspiration, Claire from Haken en meer and Pinterest mostly. There you can get lots and lots of patterns and color ideas. But now, I hardly need any outside inspiration anymore. I’m full of inspiration myself. The ideas and patterns keep on popping in my head.

What are you working on at the moment?
I am working on all kinds of small projects at the moment, for the Color ‘n Cream shop, I’m making flower garlands, flower coasters, lots of tutorials, cushion covers… Always about 5 projects at a time.
Where do you feel most comfortable crocheting?
I have a lovely studio/ craft room with a crochet corner (the Poang chair from IKEA is wonderful to crochet in!! Even though it’s quite ugly…) , but I also love to crochet on the couch watching a movie. Oh, and in bed sometimes too. My man always goes running at 6.00 am, so that’s a perfect time, before the kids wake up, crochet in silence and pyjama’s…
Do you do any other crafts and what are your hobbies?
Ohhhh, yes!! Don’t have time for them though… I love to draw, sew, read. And I love modelling clay, felt, paper… Maybe in a few years or another life. I’m also a collector of little dolls, pretty tins, vintage porcelain. Never a dull or boring moment!

Thank you so much for sharing your inspiration and process with us Jenn! I suggest you put the kettle on, and go for a visit over to Jenn’s blog; you'll love it!
Wishing you a happy Wednesday! How are your projects coming along?

  3. I've been following Jenn for about a year and hands down, she is my FAVORITE crochet blogger when it comes to color. I love how clean all her projects look - and the color... there is no other like her for color! Color is my biggest challenge when I crochet so I'm amazed by crocheters like Jenn and Lucy and others for their command of color. I'm so glad you got a chance to feature her and I'm so happy to know that her head is bursting with inspiration as I want to see much much more from her as the years go on and I'm glad she's not out of ideas. AWESOME. My own blog has been silent for a few months as life's busy-ness has taken over, but I do always find time to read thru the blogs I follow and I love them dearly and blogs like Color 'n Cream make me KNOW I will get back to my own creations and blog VERY SOON!
